Celebrations begin

Tuesday, 7th July, 2009

The city's emergency services joined with the Aboriginal community yesterday to celebrate the start of NAIDOC Week.

National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee Week began in 1957 as a way of promoting the understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. This year's theme is "Honouring our Elders, Nurturing our Youth". Jill Edge is an Aboriginal Community Liason Officer with the local police force and helped put yesterday's event together.

Ms Edge said the event, held locally for the second time, worked to break down barriers. Police, Ambulance and Fire Service officers shared music and food with indigenous people in AJ Keast Park yesterday and a larger NAIDOC Week celebration will be held in Sturt Park on Thursday from 10am until 4pm.
