Long riders on a mission

One brave woman and her daughters are in the city on a journey from Western Australia to Queensland on horseback to raise money for breast cancer research. Kerry Stanley, daughters Shannon and Kate, and their bright pink support truck arrived yesterday afternoon. They are spending two days at the racecourse for a well-deserved rest. They set off from Bindoon in WA about 11 weeks ago and hope to arrive in Beaudesert, Queensland in June. "Kerry's Ride 4 Life" hope to raise funds for breast cancer research and raise awareness of the disease.
Kerry said so far they had had huge support, especially from truckies along the way, and that things were going well. "I'm really happy with the way the horses are going," she said. Kerry was reared on cattle stations and has a great deal of riding experience. The family's horses are well-trained and the group ride close to the highways and camp on the side of the road. The truck also helps escort them and carry their needs. Kerry's other daughters, Rachel and Louise, will particpate in some legs of the journey.
While some might think Kerry's journey across the Nullabor riding horses with her daughters mad, she said she had a driving ambition to do something different for the cause. Kerry's grandmother died of breast cancer, her mother has suffered from the disease and Kerry herself has had pre-cancerous growths removed.
She is concerned for her daughters and other young women and said raising money for breast cancer research seemed to her like the natural thing to do. Kate and Shannon are doing their schooling via distance education with the help of the internet while on the journey.
If you don't see Kerry or the girls about town but would still like to make a donation, the Kerry's Ride 4 Life bank account number is BSB: 633 000, Account: 1304 806 92 (Bendigo Bank).
