Wanton destruction prompts increased cemetery patrols
Friday, 20th June, 2008
City Council and police will increase their patrols at the cemetery after vandals attacked and damaged about 20 graves.
Statues and other ornaments on the graves in the General 3 area of the cemetery were smashed, probably some time over last weekend.
The destruction was reported to police on Wednesday.
City Council's General Manager, Frank Zaknich, yesterday condemned the vandalism and urged people to report any suspicious activity at the cemetery to the police.
"The decorative cherubs and angels, vases and religious icons have been smashed including some that were permanent fixtures of the headstones," Mr Zaknich said.
"It is very disappointing that people regard this as fun and very upsetting for the families," he said.
The damage has been inspected by senior Council management and police, and Council will continue the cleanup and increase the number of security patrols at the cemetery, Mr Zaknich said.
Police are asking anyone who might be able to help them catch the vandals to phone the police station on 8087 0299 or call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
