Get silly for sids
Monday, 23rd June, 2008
Red Nose Day is coming up again, and everyone is encouraged to get silly for a great cause. Buying a red nose on June 27 is a way of showing support for the annual event, which is the major fundraiser for SIDS and Kids. SIDS and Kids is dedicated to the elimination of sudden infant death. Originally established to undertake research and provide education about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), the charity expanded in 2002 to provide a wide range of services. Today SIDS and Kids gives counselling and support to families who have suffered the sudden death of a young child, no matter what the cause.
Since 1990 the funds and awareness raised by Red Nose Day has been instrumental in reducing the SIDS infant mortality rate by 90 per cent. However, about 200 children a month still die from a variety of causes.
Red Nose Day has been held on the last Friday in June each year since 1988. A range of Red Nose Day products, including red noses for peopleand cars, toys, bracelets, pens, pins and lip balm, are available at the BDT front office and around the city.
