City on the silver screen

Saturday, 24th May, 2008

A movie which was partly filmed in Broken Hill and district last year is now screening here. Cactus, which brought a film crew to the city last May, can now be seen at the Silver City Cinema.

It tells the story of John Kelly, a hard-working man desperate to find some fast cash to help his family. Although John isn't a bad guy he's hit rock bottom and thinks the only way out of his situation is to accept a job of kidnapping a professional gambler and delivering him to some 'bad guys' in the Australian outback.

The movie features youngster Seymon Eckert, chosen from about 30 local hopefuls for the role of Katie. Seymon is seen in four scenes of the film. Her parents Kelli and Adrian Eckert went to see Cactus during the week and said they were very proud of Seymon and liked the movie.

"It was very good... we enjoyed it immensely," Mrs Eckert said. She said the crew treated Seymon like a princess throughout filming. Seymon said it was a lot of fun.

Mrs Eckert said Wilcannia, the Mundi Mundi Plains and a number of local streets can be easily recognised in Cactus. "It's definitely good for Broken Hill," she said.

Cactus, rated M, stars Bryan Brown (Breaker Morant) and Shane Jacobson (Kenny). It is now screening at the Silver City Cinema.
