Young local singer Annastassia Dennis has been crowned this year's Pop Star.

The 14-year-old beat over 20 other young performers to win the final of popular Eisteddfod event on Monday night. Bianca Honson was runner-up.

It was a case of third time lucky for Anna, who failed to reach the final in 2006 and was runner up toanother talented teen, Brenna Ellis, last year.

After being shortlisted with nine other competitors on Sunday night, Anna performed in Monday night's final along with five other singers.

"I wasn't really expecting it. I was excited. I tried really hard," said Anna, who won the final with the jazz standard "Summertime" from the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess.

The Willyama High School student, who has been practicing the song for past six months, said she definitely had her own style.

"I really like making songs my own, and presenting a version that people would not expect."

In her comments, adjudicator Anna Lester was clearly impressed by the performance."You sang this wonderful song with a great sense of style, and presented your own distinctive interpretation with confidence and real musical flair," Ms Lester wrote.While she has been singing for the past five years, Anna said in the past 12 months she has had the opportunity to perform live on numerous occasions, and it helped her develop as a performer.

"I've definitely developed as a performer. Since last year I've learnt a lot about performing."

When it comes to music, Anna isn't your typical teenager. A fan of jazz, she also lists rockers Janis Joplin and David Bowie as favourite artists.

"I have a wide variety of musical tastes."

The BH Eisteddfod continues today at the Entertainment Centre with instrumental, verse speaking and speech and drama events, and concludes on Saturday with dance. Entry to all events is $3 for adults while children are free.
