Soccer kick off under lights
Thursday, 27th March, 2008
The city's junior soccer stars will take centre stage tomorrow night as the Broken Hill Soccer Association (BHSA) holds its junior trial games under lights.
Under 6 through to Under 12 grades will take the field in the gala opening night, followed by Under 14 and Colts on Saturday and senior grades on Sunday.
Trial games will be held over the next three weeks to give players plenty of time to prepare for the season proper, and play is expected to commence at 6pm on Fridays, 4pm on Saturdays and 11.30am on Sundays.
BHSA Match Committee Chairman Russell Gilmour said the youngsters would relish the chance to play under lights, and that night games would also alleviate any scheduling clashes.
"Last year the Under 14s and Colts played their semi-finals at night and they all really seemed to enjoy it, so we thought we'd do it with younger grades," he said.
"Also the junior trial games clashed with the end of the cricket season and with the hot weather we'd been having... we thought we'd kill two birds with one stone by having them at night."
The Soccer Association is also looking at introducing two new divisions this year in the form of a 10-14 years girls' competition, and an over-30s men's competition.
Mr Gilmour encouraged anyone contemplating taking up soccer to come along and get involved. "These are only trial games. There is no commitment to playing the season so come down and have a run and if you like it, then join a club," he said.
"There's a lot of new players coming into the comp, it's looking pretty good. All clubs welcome new and old members, so bring your family and friends."Dads, dust off the old boots and shin pads. Girls, bring your friends - you never know, you may just enjoy it. "If the clubs get enough interest for these new divisions we will be able to include them in the last round of trials."
The full list of trial game times will be printed in the BDT tomorrow, and anyone seeking more information can contact Mr Gilmour on 0438 714 202.
