BIU Band looking for beginners

Hey kids, can you blow a rasberry? Do your parents say your lungs are like a set of bellows? Do people tell you that you could talk under water? If you answered yes to any of these questions then chances are the local brass band is interested in talking to you. The Barrier Industrial Unions' Band is looking for new recruits to take up one of the many instruments the band has available for learners.
The band has enlisted the services of tutor Oliver Harris who arrived in the city last year to take up a music teaching position at a local high school. Mr Harris was a member of the highly regarded St Mary's Brass band in Sydney prior to joining the local band and he hopes to see his new band continue to grow in strength and numbers.
"I feel privileged to come to such a unique place like Broken Hill and to be able to offer something to a community that has such a strong musical background," he said.
"Overall I hope to help the band achieve a better standard in general but the main focus for me as tutor is to try to establish a flow on from junior members to the main band. To do that we need more junior learners."
Participating in civic ceremonies such as ANZAC Day and Australia Day as well as community celebrations like the annual Christmas Pageant, the BIU band offers youngsters an opportunity to contribute to community life as well as learning to read and play music.
Mr Harris said that community involvement provided great rewards for young people because it gave them a connection with others no matter where they may travel. "Music prepares you for life in general and gives you something in common with people everywhere," Mr Harris said.
"When I came here last year I had an instant broad network of friends that I wouldn't have met if it weren't for music."
The BIU band has learner sessions from 5pm Tuesday afternoons at the Band Hall in Beryl Street. Instruments, uniforms and tuition are all provided. Interested learners of any age are encouraged to ring 0429 964 713 to find out more.
