Memorial Oval given makeover
Friday, 18th November, 2011
The seats in the grandstand at the Memorial Oval have been replaced and other work is being done to improve the sports ground for patrons.
The bleachers wall on the South side of the oval is also being demolished and replaced using money from a grant to City Council from the Federal Government.
Council’s General Manager, Frank Zaknich, said all the work should be completed in four to six weeks.
“It is fairly time consuming,” Mr Zaknich said.
“The walls have to be demolished and then new walls need to be put up. It is a fairly major project.”
Mr Zaknich said the overall funding for the project was $70,000 and that the work was maintenance rather than a public safety issue.
He said the funding was also used to do repairs on the O’Neill tennis courts earlier in the year.
The oval repairs would not affect any events, Mr Zaknich said.
“We’ve timed it for when there are minimal events occurring.
“We would like to acknowledge the support of the Federal Government. It is always good to get funding.”
