Christmas in the air

Retailers are expecting Christmas decorations put up in town this week to spur on the shoppers as the festive season nears.
“I don’t think people have realised how close Christmas is,” said the chairman of City Traders, Peter Harvey.
But the music store owner said Council and Essential Energy’s erecting the Christmas tree and tinsel decorations in the CBD and Oxide Street could get them in the spirit.
“Council have been putting decorations up lately so maybe that will get people shopping.”
Argent Street shoe store operator, Peter Nash, agreed the decorations would be a “subtle reminder”.
“It’ll certainly get people talking about it,” he said. “I must admit it’s on our to-do list.”
Mr Nash said he expected shops with good customer service and popular stock to do “exceptionally well.”
“At the moment, they have been reasonably good for September/October,” the Sampsons owner said.
With new mines opening and an air of confidence in the city, people were a lot more positive financially, he said.
“In a local environment we are probably in a better position that we were about 12 months ago.”
He said people were now shopping closer to Christmas and were less reliant on paying gifts off.
“The days of having massive lay-bys aren’t happening now. The younger generation, if they see it, they get it.”
