The feature film ‘Broken Hill', which was shot in and around the city last year, recently won three awards at Europe's largest youth Film Festival. The film's cast includes Oscar winner Timothy Hutton, Spy Kids star Alexa Vega, Rhys Wakefield (Home and Away) and Luke Arnold (McLeod's Daughters). It won the awards at the Giffoni Film Festival in Italy.
The joint Australian/ American production tells the story of a teenager who is expected to take over his family's sheep station, but dreams of being a classical musician. A report in the West Australian newspaper this week said the main character, Luke Arnold, has been compared to a young Heath Ledger and Mel Gibson because of his rugged good looks. The movie was written and directed by Dagen Merill and produced by Chris Wyatt. Mr Wyatt told the Barrier Daily Truth last year that Broken Hill was chosen as the film's location because it had a beautiful outback landscape and enough facilities for the crew. City Council's Manager of Community Development, Fiona Ellis, said the movie had excellent production values and would open in the USA on September 11. Ms Ellis said Council was working hard to have the Australian premiere in Broken Hill. To view a trailer of the movie, visit the website: http://www.traileraddict. com/trailer/broken-hill/trailer.
