Vandalism at the Regional Aquatic Centre has not stopped school children from enjoying all the new amenities.

The pool was vandalised in the early hours of Sunday morning when, police said, three males broke in and threw a table, three bins and a pool cover into the water. One of them also defecated in the pool.

Police described the suspects’ actions as a “real insult to the community” and said they were very keen to speak to anyone who could identify those responsible.

But the vandalism didn’t stop the best behaved students from Burke Ward Primary School being treated to a pool party yesterday.

Teacher Lindy Robins said children who were given academic or sports awards or who showed good manners and attitudes were taken to the pool as a reward.

“It is seen as being a great way to reward the kids,” Ms Robins said.

She said the children were excited about the visit “especially because they get to check out the new centre”.

Ms Robins said days like these gave the children something to strive for.

“It pays off and it is great to be the first school to try the centre out,” she said.
