Junior refs take charge

Broken Hill’s basketballers weren’t the only ones to impress at the recent SA Junior Country Championships - referees Andrew Donnelly and Connor McLaren also attracted plenty of praise.
The youngsters were joined by fellow referee Mark Harris, all of whom are part of the BH Basketball Association’s (BHBA) junior referee development program.
BHBA vice president, Keven Donnelly, said he had heard nothing but “glowing reports” about the boys’ performances and said they gained valuable exprience at the carnival.
“They were given the roles of refereeing some very competitive games during the carnival and reports from the senior referee coaches in Adelaide said that both boys conducted themselves well in their assigned games and ensured the games were played well and without incident,” he said.
“In fact, they have been asked to return this weekend to referee for the Under 12s and Under 16s Country championships which shows how happy they were with the standard of referees we sent.”
BHBA President Grahame Semmens said the duo’s performance showed that basketball has a bright future in the city.
“I’m very proud of the achievements of our referees,” he said.
“To be asked to referee at this level of basketball shows that the future of basketball is in good hands. We must always remember that without referees, we have no games.”
Any players who would like to take up refereeing and help out the juniors in the social competition are invited to leave their name at the stadium office.
