TIGHT CONTEST: Race one, the Euro Exploration Services Pace, set the tone for the evening. TIGHT CONTEST: Race one, the Euro Exploration Services Pace, set the tone for the evening.

By The Pack Horse

Describing Friday night’s harness race meeting as one of the best the city has ever seen would be an understatement.

The main race, The Coughlan Carnival Of Cups, was won in fine fashion by Thywillbedone for trainer/driver Anthony Adams.

Thywillbedone hit the finish line 14 metres in front and congratulations to Anthony and owners Ray Mason and Ron Cresswell on the win.

A special mention must also go to the hard working team of Kerry Adams along with the old fellas Darryl and Mathew.

The 24 pushbikes and the $1000 voucher proved very popular. The voucher went the way of a local lady involved in harness racing but to make it even better she selected Thywillbedone to win and pocketed $1800 for her efforts.

Having members of each of the sponsors to present the rugs and trophies only made winning more special to all involved, so once again thank you to all involved.

Congratulations also to Cassie Robinson for being named leading driver and to larger than life Tony Camilleri on winning the leading trainer. Shay Shay Shania won the title of horse of the year.

Race 1.

On barrier rise Hei Bert took control of from the top end from Bubble Wrap in the death seat, Farewell Hanover 1-1, Barnover Cecil at leaders’ back and eventual winner Beau Ciel three back the fence.

With a good tempo being set no early moves were made until the 300 metre mark when beau Ciel found a run to prove too strong at the finish from Hei Bert and Barnover Cecil which had its best run in some time.

Race 2.

Smart Cecil and Montana Madge staged war early to determine who would lead, aided by the inside running Smart Cecil. Montana Madge dropped to the leaders’ back allowing Aurora Forte to take up the death seat, and Ebony Girl 1-1.

At the bell the speed stepped up with Aurora Forte and Smart Cecil kicking clear to fight it out with victory going the way of Smart Cecil (Kate Attard) from Aurora Forte second and Montana Madge third.

Race 3.

Broken Hill’s favourite girls led and duly saluted.

With Shay Shay Shania leading and setting a very respectable mile rate of 2.02.5 some of the other drivers may have doubted local knowledge. With Shay Shay Shania leading Beaudine Rivera death seat, Glacial leaders back and Wobbly Archer 1-1 little was happening until the bell sounded and the tempo heated right up. In the run to the line Shay Shay Shania was holding them all at bay much to the joy of all concerned. Wobbly Archer came second and Glacial third.

This win put the horse of the year result beyond doubt; an effort that Shay Shay Shania totally deserved. It was also on a night that she was to share success with her siblings Smart Cecil (winner race 2) and Barnover Cecil (3rd in race one).

Race 4.

As the field thundered down the home straight in their quest for glory Imperial Phoenix rolled out of her gear as Thywillbedone cruised to the front and was never threatened thereafter.

With some mid-race moves the spot outside the leader had a couple of challengers. First, Tommys Lil Sis then No Will Power but it was all to no avail as Thywillbedone cruised to victory by 14 metres from the gallant and unlucky Xavier Jack who was looking for a run but got home good late. The very consistent Passing Shadows came third.

On the all clear the happy owners received their rug and cup from the proud sponsors Dean and Trish Coughlan.

Race 5.

The win in this race was set up by a very good drive early by Cassie Robinson to find the spot outside the leader from barrier six, Bettertobelucky controlled the race from the spot outside the leader with no moves coming to the 700 metre mark from Heza Bomber Boy who put it to Bettertobelucky down the back until condition told out on Heza Bomber Boy.

Bettertobelucky won well in the finish from Heza Bomber Boy second followed by Take A Gamble third.

Race 6.

Just to show the country Broken Hill’s not perfect we had a false start with some gear problems on Edward Dillinger. In this event Anthony Adams brought about a training driving double aboard Little Trickster to win from the very gallant Lombo Carolina and Redrumandruskies rounding out the placings.

On behalf of the Broken Hill Harness Racing Club I would like to thank everyone who attended and made the night such a success.
