Local artist Tanya Marie Reeves has had six artworks selected for an exhibition in New York.
The Agora Gallery in New York City will feature the original works in “Out From Down Under & Beyond: Fine Art from Australia and New Zealand.”
The exhibition is scheduled to run from May 18 to June 7 and Tanya will be in the Big Apple for the opening night on Thursday, May 24.
“It’s absolutely amazing,” Tanya told the BDT.
“It’s just a bit surreal - just that my paintings are sitting in a box over there at the moment was awesome enough. It’s just brilliant.”
Tanya has been represented by Agora Gallery for the past year and said she was “strongly urged” to submit works for the exhibition.
“I was lucky enough to be selected.”
The self-taught artist describes her work as “more city” than landscape. Her acrylic paintings use geometric forms and striking colour combinations to create vivid and kaleidoscopic imagery.
Her abstractions conceal forms such as a flower blossom, a human hand and the female form.
A spokesman for Agora Gallery said Tanya had a “meticulous technique.”
“It results in strict yet fluid lines that draw viewers’ eyes across the canvas, enticing them to enter the unique world conjured by Tanya’s paintbrush.”
As well as being a painter, Tanya also does artisan craft, poetry and photography, builds websites and creates her own online magazines.
Tanya said she has been “drawing forever” but the single mother of Heaven (10) and Ripley (8) said she had focussed all of her spare time on developing her work.
“These last couple of years I’ve been pretty determined to become a professional artist. It’s a lot of work but I’m pretty determined.”
“The ultimate goal for myself is to have a gallery on the coast.”
