Youngsters get a leg up

Friday, 8th May, 2009

A number of local sporting bodies rallied together to ease the financial burden for parents who sent their sons to the recent under 15 and 16 State Zone trials in Sydney.

The Barrier Shinglebacks, Broken Hill Outback Emus, West Broken Hill Junior Sports Association and Central Football Club each donated a generous amount of money to help the nine players get to the trials.

Sixteen-year-old Zac Gentle, who was among those aiming to impress selectors and AFL recruiters, said the support was much appreciated. "It was really kind of them to do that and it really helped. "The parents are all really grateful as well." Selections for the NSW/ACT Under 16 RAMS squad, regarded as a stepping stone into the AFL, will be announced on Friday this week.
