Escaped prisoners captured

Three prisoners who escaped from the Broken Hill jail on Monday were recaptured yesterday morning on the Sydney road.
It has not been revealed how they escaped but police said they were alerted by a member of the public who told them he had seen three men in prison greens walking past the Centro Shopping Centre about 1pm on Monday.
Police and Corrective Services officers conducted a search around the shopping centre but were unable to find the men, Duty Officer Matt Scott said yesterday.
That night a number of attempts were made to steal cars before a Holden Commodore was stolen from Gaffney Street, he said.
“Around 5.45am (yesterday) the vehicle was recovered 40 kilometres east of Broken Hill on the Barrier Highway,” Duty Officer Scott said.
A passing motorist later reported seeing three people walking along the highway, he said, and police arrested the men about 9.30am, five kilometres from where they had abandoned the stolen car.
Duty Officer Scott said none of the escapees was local. One was from the Newcastle area, one was from Wellington and the other was from Dubbo.
Yesterday afternoon the escapees, Rickie Fernando (23), Dwayne Allan Stanley (29) and Christopher John Totten (26), were brought before the Local Court where they were each charged with escaping lawful custody and allowing themselves to be carried in a stolen car.
They were remanded in custody to face court again on June 19.
