Alma School Anzac Day

Thursday, 9th April, 2009

The Alma Public School has held its Anzac Day ceremony early this year. Teacher Peter Dougherty said the ceremony was held yesterday to allow the entire school to come together and commemorate those who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Yesterday's ceremony was hosted by school captains Callum Dodimead and Veronika Holland.

It was held under the school's Covered Outdoor Learning Area with a number of parents and community members attending. The service included a reading about Anzac Day by Summa Stephens as well as a poem read by Shania Gebhardt, and the ode which was read by Whitney Smith. A special feature of this year's ceremony included a "welcome to country" by Rachel Boon and a special reading by Karri Smith about the involvement of Aboriginal servicemen and women in the armed forces.

The ceremony concluded with the Last Post, played by buglar Peter Keenan, and a minute's of silence. Mr Dougherty said the school would also be represented at the local Anzac Day service.
