Despite a build up hampered by injuries and unavailable players, Broken Hill’s coaches and players firmly believe that they can win today’s Miners Cup match against the Far North Football League at AAMI Stadium.

The confidence exists even though as many as 18 first choice players are missing from the side and that 11 members of the team were not part of last year’s  Miners Cup-winning team.

Last year Broken Hill dished out a footballing lesson to their SA opposition, recording a 54 point, 20.14 (134) to 12.8 (80), victory.

Yesterday the players and their support entourage left Broken Hill on the team bus early in the morning.

The team then blew out the cobwebs from the bus trip with a light training session at Alberton Oval, the headquarters of Port Power.

After that the players were treated to a tour of Port’s training facilities at the club’s Allan Scott Headquarters.

Last night the West Adelaide Football Club held a dinner function for the Broken Hill and Roxby Downs teams where the mood  was jovial.

One of Broken Hill’s key concerns for the match will be their ability to restrict Roxby Downs.

Roxby forwards Joel Harman and Dale Summerton have been in supreme touch in the Far North League, both averaging around four goals a game.

Also in good form is the reigning Far North League Best and Fairest, Cody Kenny, who will need to be closely guarded.

Likewise, Roxby Downs captain Ben Casey and fellow midfielder Justin Watson are capable of winning plenty of the ball and may need to be shut down with a tag.

Broken Hill coach, David Ruddock, believes the speed of the team is their strength and that they will need to capitalise on it.

“The team we have is small and fast and the big oval will suit that,” he said.

“We’ve got eight of nine players who will rotate through the midfield, so that’s an area we need to do well in.”

This morning the team will get together for breakfast in the city before turning their attention to the task ahead.

They will arrive at AAMI Stadium about 3pm for the scheduled 4:05pm start.

Broken Hill is expected to line up as follows:
FB Matt Garrick Jake Napier Chris Billings
HB Matt Dempster Dylan Browne Brent Rose
W Jono Naden Jayden Kelly Michael Westley
HF Jarrod Rudduck Cynan Smith Daniel Milne
FF Tom Billings Nathan Kickett Anthony Henderson
1st: Matt Nelson Justin Heath Marc Purcell
Int: John Blore, Mick Anderson, Bayden Quinn, Zayden White, Nick Agius
