Tradition lives on

Friday, 10th April, 2009

Colourful hats and cheers of "Happy Easter!" greeted about 100 people as the Alma School's Easter hat parade wound its way down Patton street yesterday. Mums, dads grandparents and members of the public cheered and clapped as around 300 children from pre-school to year six walked past with Easter messages.

School principal, Larry Micevski led the parade and said it was a tradition that went back generations. "It's a tradition that goes back years, long before my time," he said. "This is only my second year but... yes, more than 30 years." It's thought the parade had been held for around 36 years and Mr Micevski said last year a visitor congratulated him on the parade saying it was a dying tradition in the city and coastal areas.

Children wore hats they had made at home and at school and at the conclusion of the parade a picnic lunch was shared among students, teachers and parents.,
