Two women have been charged with stealing a cheque book from a man's house and cashing one of the cheques at a motel.
The women stole the cheque book from the home of an elderly man in Williams Street after coming to his door and offering to clean his house last week, police said yesterday.
The police said they suspected that the alleged thieves had performed a similar ruse on other elderly people in the city.
Yesterday they asked for anyone who had been visited by two women and robbed of anything over the last week or so to call them on 8087 0299.
The women were arrested on Wednesday after they cashed a cheque at a local motel and the manager became suspicious and called police. Police said they had established that the women had attempted to cash cheques at other motels.
The women, one 39 years old and the other 28, have each been charged with stealing the cheque book and using a false instrument for financial advantage.
They have been ordered to face the Local Court on May 26.
