For youngsters Hannah Evers and Olivia Burt, this year's eisteddfod will be all about the hip hop. Entries are now being accepted for the 40th Broken Hill Eisteddfod, to be held in August, and organisers have introduced a number of new events following the recent success of the Pop Stars category for young singers.
Two hip hop dance competitions, a 12 years and under troupe (four or more) and an open troupe, have been added to the program. There are also new events in the drama, vocal, piano and instrumental sections, including a slow melody competition for brass instruments and two character item events in the speech and drama section. The eisteddfod will be held at the Entertainment Centre from August 22 to 26. A perpetual trophy and $100 in prizes has also been provided by the BH Philharmonic Society for the winner of the Primary Choirs competition. Eisteddfod spokeswoman Merrilyn Podnar said this year's competition would also feature a gala concert to mark the 40th anniversary. All entries close on June 5. Schedules, which include entry forms, are available from Broken Hill Music in Argent Street, the Charles Rasp Library and the South Pharmacy.
