Firebug about

Thursday, 2nd April, 2009

Four small grass fires on the weekend appeared to have been deliberately lit, according to the fire brigade which was called to put them out. One of the fires was in South BH, two were in the North and the other in Sturt Park. Central Fire Station Officer Sue Collins said yesterday that two of the fires had been started in Morgan Street in the early hours of Saturday morning.

One was in a vacant block and the other on the side of the road, she said. Straw mulch around a flower bed in Sturt Park was set alight about 12.30am on Sunday, and at about 1pm that day the South Fire Brigade was called to a grass fire in Jamieson Street, SO Collins said. She said that there had been a spate of such fires lately and that Sturt Park had been the main target. Police yesterday appealed to the public to help them catch the firebugs. "It's a bit of a concern that someone's lighting fires and we are asking people to keep a lookout, especially on weekends," a spokesman said.
