Festive families will deck their halls with glowing lights when the ultimate battle for the city's best Christmas display kicks off today.

With Christmas just weeks away, the Barrier Daily Truth's Christmas Lights competition is again on the hunt for Broken Hill's best and brightest decorations.

"We got heaps last year and we're hoping with the great prizes on offer people will decorate their houses and make Broken Hill look great this Christmas," said BDT advertising manager Peter Keenan.

A 90L Engell esky valued at $319 is up for grabs for the winner, with Christmas hampers for those who make it to second and third place.

Entries close on December 18, with the winners announced in the December 20 edition.

Hard-working Chris Malthouse is in the final stages of his award-winning display at his Schlapp Street house.

It's the 14th year he and wife Shirley have adorned their family home in bright LED lights in the lead up to Christmas.

"The kids come by and their eyes light up as much as our display does," Chris told the BDT.

"They adore the colourful, flashing lights."

Entrants can e-mail a photo of their display along with their name and address to advertising@bdtruth.com. au or deliver it to the BDT advertising office.
