Accused Christmas raffle thief granted bail

Monday, 7th January, 2013

A young man accused of stealing items from a Christmas raffle at the Centro Westside supermarket and pulling a knife on a security guard has pleaded not guilty.

Darren Bugmy (18) was arrested in Wilcannia on December 18, two days after he allegedly pilfered the items from the Rotary Christmas raffle which consisted of a box trailer filled with prizes.

According to police, Mr Bugmy was caught in the act and chased into the car park by a security guard and a member of the shopping centre’s staff whom he threatened with a knife before running off down Mercury Street.

Police said they found him in Wilcannia, charged him with theft and violence offences and refused him bail.

A bail hearing in the Local Court also denied him bail and he remained in jail until yesterday when the court resumed in Wentworth.

Mr Bugmy faced the court via video link from the BH jail and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

He was granted to bail to appear in the BH Local Court on February 12.
