Free magic shows are conjuring up some fun at Centro Westside this week.
Elio Simonetti has been a professional conjuror since he was 15 years old and is recognised as one of Australia’s most inventive and artistic magicians.
Elio is the only Australian magician to have been invited to appear before the Prince and Princess of Wales, the President of Italy (before an audience of 10,000) and Australian Heads of State.
The performance involves elegant illusion set to classical music. Elio and partner Eva Salleh’s routines are all meticulously timed to the music.
“The performances have been wonderful,” Elio said after one of his shows yesterday.
“Especially with the crowd - they were a nice, warm audience.”
This is Elio and Salleh’s third visit to the city.
“I like Broken Hill, I like the audiences and I have been asked to come back; so people must like the shows,” he said.
“It’s a place where not a lot of performers make the trek. It’s not on the way or close to anything.”
Elio said he had little time for anything else, such as sight-seeing, while he was on tour.
“Most of the time, I just do the shows,” he said. “We have a little bit of time for lunch before we have to set up for the next show. There is a lot of getting ready involved.
“It’s also been so hot - we don’t want to do anything.”
Elio said he would like people to come along to the show.
“It has style and quality that is far beyond what anyone expects,” he said.
“Centro are providing the show free of charge. It’s not just for the kids but the adults as well and they absolutely love it.”
Rachel Hammond from Centro’s centre management said the performances were “fantastic”.
“The kids love it and I think the adults love it as well,” Ms Hammond said.
“We have had heaps of kids sitting right up the front. Elio gets some of them to volunteer, which puts a smile on their faces.”
Elio’s show began on Monday and continues today and tomorrow at 11am and 1pm.
