Federal MP Sussan Ley has weighed into the Newstart allowance debate.
The Liberal member for Farrer said the government should put extra funding towards helping parents find work rather than increasing long term assistance.
“All this really sounds like is a preamble to a Government back flip on the parenting payment, now they’ve abandoned plans for a budget surplus,” Ms Ley said.
“Unlike the Howard Government’s welfare to work reforms, Labor’s record on moving people off the dole has been, in a word, abysmal.”
The federal government has moved 80,000 single parents off the parenting payment to the lower Newstart allowance.
The switch leaves them $110-a-week worse off.
Ms Ley’s comments came after dumped PM, Kevin Rudd, said the payments should be increased above their current $35-a-day limit.
“I think people need to show a bit more of a heart,” Mr Rudd told ABC TV.
