Healthy habits help is at hand

Next week everyone will be invited to make some small lifestyle changes to achieve a healthier outlook.

During Healthy Weight Week (January 20 to 27) dietitians will be offering a helping hand, said Community Dietitian Heidi Drenkhahn.

“We want to encourage everyone to engage in healthy diet and lifestyle habits. It is about encouraging and motivating people to make changes in their everyday routine for the better,” she said.

A stall in the Town Square will be open during the week for information about healthy eating, weight loss and physical activity, Ms Drenkhahn said.

“We will also be able to provide more specific information, such as eating on a budget, or healthy eating for those with lactose intolerance.”

A 10-week challenge focussing on creating many healthy habits will also be launched.

“We are hoping to recruit community members into the challenge. This is the first time it has run at a community level,” Ms Drenkhahn said.

“Participants will be supported by a weekly newsletter and email contact with a dietitian to help troubleshoot issues that arise.

“Each week the newsletter will cover different topics related to nutrition, physical activity and motivation. Participants will be able to email questions to a dietitian who will help them achieve their health goals or refer them to another health professional who can.”

Challenge participants will also be able to attend a healthy eating and goal setting seminar to help them get started. This will be held on Wednesday, January 23 at the PCYC at 6.30pm.

After the 10 weeks, prizes will be awarded for those who succeed in making lasting lifestyle change, and not just losing weight.

“It is about focusing on healthy lifestyle habits. If you can lose weight that is fantastic but it is also just about being more active,” Ms Drenkhahn said.

People can register at the Healthy Weight Week stall next week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 10am and 2pm.

Registration forms can also be picked up from the PCYC, Temple of Fitness, Anytime Fitness, YMCA or the hospital dietetics office. Registrations will be taken up until Sunday, January 27.
