Try your luck
Thursday, 26th March, 2009
Locals looking for a wager before Saturday's races are encouraged to try their luck at the traditional St Pat's Games Night. The event provides a range of dice and wheel games for punters, including Crown and Anchor, Unders and Overs and local creation "The Horse Game". Convenor Geoff Cullenward said the Games Night continued to prove popular with those enjoying a night out before St Pat's, with The Legion Club providing a great venue for the event this year.
"We get a fair few people, but it's hard to tell an exact number as people come and go," he said. "People sort of do laps around the various venues around town. "It's at the Legion this year, and it has been totally refurbished and it's quite a comfortable venue now. "They've been a great supporter of ours over the years, for our sake and theirs we're hoping it's going to be a very successful night." The night is also used to raise money for Sacred Heart Primary School, with $4,430 raised for the school in 2008.
"It's a lot of fun, and it's a worthwhile cause that's in place," said Mr Cullenward. "The money raised helps the local Catholic school to stay on a level playing field with the rest of the state schools." The Games Night will begin at 7pm on Friday, and patrons will be required to be a member of the Legion Club, or be signed in by a member. "Be there, be a part of the crowd, and you never know, the dice could be rolling your way this year. "Some people have been known to win quite a lot over the course of the night. It's a great way to begin the St Pat's weekend of festivities."
