Firefighters are still not sure what caused a fire that tore through the bedroom of a Gaffney Lane house this week.

Police officers and fire crews rushed to the blaze on Wednesday night about 9:45pm.

It's believed no-one was home at the time and the house sustained extensive fire damage to a bedroom as well as smoke and water damage.

Broken Hill station officer Scott Hunter said he wasn't ruling out an electrical appliance as the cause.

"It's possible, but at this time it's still undetermined," SO Hunter said. "It's still being investigated at this time."

He said it was a good reminder to check smoke alarms and remember to refrain from leaving electrical appliances on while out of the house.

Police forensic officers and detectives were yesterday looking for evidence as to the cause of the fire.
