A photography workshop focusing on abandoned spaces will be held in Milparinka and Tibooburra in two weeks’ time.
ABC Open’s Jenia Ratcliffe will be running the free workshops.
“If you’re in the top western corner of NSW on the weekend of April 20 and 21 you can turn up to ABC Open’s free photography workshops in Milparinka and Tibooburra, held as part of the Tibooburra Festival in June,” Ms Ratcliffe said.
“You can learn about cam- era settings and techniques, receive advice on taking photographs, plus have your work mounted and exhibited as part of the festivities.”
She said the theme for the workshop is abandoned spaces and there would be plenty of opportunities to take spectacu- lar photographs in two very unique heritage towns.
She said it was part of ABC Open’s “Snapped: At Home” project, which involved shar- ing the home through photos.
“The theme didn’t f it in Milparinka as there isn’t many homes, so I adapted it to aban- doned spaces,” Jenia said.
“They have a population of
two and it used to be about 200 - so there will be a lot of aban- doned buildings. Milparinka will be entrenched with his- tory.
“I will also collect stories from the photos that were taken and they will printed into pan- els. They will be exhibited in Tibooburra and Milparinka.”
Ms Ratcliffe said the point of the workshops was to engage the community.
“These are people we wouldn’t normally engage
with, it is pretty remote and the community loves any activity that will bring them together.”
She was approached by landholder Ruth Sandow to hold the exhibition.
“She said “Why not do it in Corner Country?”,” she said.
“This way we can draw more attention to the area. Ruth said there are a lot of photographers and artists that are hidden away and this could be a chance to showcase their work.”
Jenia said anyone in the region interested in these workshops can contact her for more information.
“If people approach me I can hold workshops in the region.” To f ind out more get in touch with Jenia Ratcliffe on 8082 4024.
