Two local women will be participating in a volunteer program in South Africa at the end of year and they need some support to get there.
Madison Lawrence and Britt Tangey will travel to St Lucia in South Africa at the start of December, as part of the Volunteer Eco Students Abroad program.
The program is aimed at bringing hope to struggling communities in developing countries.
Britt (19) and Madison (18) will spend two weeks in the village volunteering.
Madison said she had always wanted to travel and volunteer.
"I went into the APY Lands in South Australia where I worked for a week renovating houses," she said.
"I loved it there and would love to go back once I finish my degree."
Madison came across the Volunteer Eco program when a spokesman came into her first lecture at her university in Adelaide.
"I attend Flinders University and I am studying a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts," she said.
She said she applied and told her friend, Britt, who lives in Broken Hill.
The girls will complete a minimum of 40 hours of hands on community based volunteer work.
This will include working with children in local orphanages where they will teach English and basic sanitation.
They will be renovating the facilities, installing new play equipment, building sustainable farming units, working in areas of conservation and an animal rehabilitation centre.
To do all this, the girls will need to raise funds.
"Any little bit will help. The money raised will be directly assisting with the costs involved in participating in the program," Madison said.
"These costs are significant and include hiring local skilled trades people, building materials and donations to local organisations."
Britt and Madison will be holding a cake stall fundraiser this weekend at the Jubilee Oval on Saturday from 10.30am.
"We need to raise about $2,500 and this doesn't include flights," Britt said.
"We are both very excited." For more information contact Madison on 0400 399 106 or Britt on 0448 698 746.
