Sports fans can get a uniquely Australian experience this weekend as some of Australia's best riders saddle up for the 17th Topar Campdraft.

The sport of camprafting is believed to have originated in Queensland in the late 1800s, and sees competitors on horseback attempt to manoeuvre cattle around an arena.

The rider is presented with a herd of cattle and must isolate one beast from the herd, then demonstrate their control of the animal by guiding it through a set course.

This year's Topar Campdraft is set to showcase all the skill and horsemanship associated with the sport, with record numbers of competitors from across three states signing on to compete.

"We are very excited for this year's event. After the last 12 months of preparation to improve our grounds and facilities it's all finally coming together," said publicity officer Sara Edwards.

The event will take place across Saturday and Sunday, with around $23,000 in prizes on offer throughout the weekend.

There will also be plenty of entertainment outside the competitive arena, with men's and women's novelty events, a whipcracking competition, and a performance by band Reflections on Saturday night.

"Some people might think that you have to own a horse or be involved in the sport to enjoy these sort of events, but we are looking to change those views," said Ms Edwards.

"It's something a little different and it makes for a really enjoyable weekend away for the family.

"We're hoping to get a good crowd to come and share the fun will us this year. Being so close to town people don't realise how easy and accessible our event is to attend."

Entry to the Campdraft is free, and camping facilities including hot showers and toilets are provided.

Full bar facilities are also available, and food and drink will be on sale including a full roast dinner on Saturday night.

The Campdraft will be held 80km outside the city on the Sydney road near Little Topar roadhouse.
