It’s long been the home of bocce but the Italo International Club building is now hosting another sport - one that also relies on accuracy.

Following an international trend, members of the Silver City Archery Club have taken to shooting indoors one night a week.

President Tim Mercer said the weekly shoot began about a month ago had was proving popular, with 20 to 25 members regularly making the night.

The club also shoots on Sunday mornings behind the racecourse and Mr Mercer said some members in particular were enjoying the option of shooting out of the elements.

“We start at 8.30 on Sunday morning and some of the members were finding it a bit hard to get around the range,” he said.

“We’re getting as many or more as we get on Sunday mornings. Everybody’s really enjoying it.”

Shooting from a distance of either 18 or 25 metres, members are competing in two indoor styles at the Tuesday night fixture.

“We’re shooting what’s called the Australian indoor and Vegas indoor.

“Indoor’s a lot more social. You would think it’s a lot easier but it hasn’t turned out that way.”

The club currently boasts about 50 members whose ages range from eight to mid 70s and Mr Mercer said anyone interested in taking up the sport could venture out to the Italo Club on Tuesday nights (starting time is 6.30pm).

“They can come along and have a chat.

“At this point we’re a fairly family orientated club.”
