Former local Angel Larkin has been given an opportunity that many girls her age could only dream about.
The 14-year-old is one of six finalists in the 2013 national Dolly Model Search.
Thousands of girls enter the competition each year, which in 1997 gave Miranda Kerr the career start that led to her fame as one of Victoria’s Secrets most popular supermodels.
But Angel, who now lives in Mildura with her mother and grandmother, is not looking that far ahead.
“It’s definitely given me a lot more self-confidence,” she said.
“I travelled to Adelaide and competed in the cat walk show where I was picked. I’m the South Australian finalist.”
Angel can be seen with the other State finalists, whom she said were all “great girls”, in the latest issue of Dolly magazine.
Readers are invited to vote online for the girl they like the best and then the public vote is combined with the judges’ scores to reveal the winner.
But even if the high school student does not win, there is still a future for her in modelling.
“The modelling company, Chadwick Models, that was there from New York really liked me and gave me their card,” Angel said.
She said that she had several relatives in Broken Hill who were excited about her brush with fame.
“I’ve got my grandfather and my aunties there and my dad died when I was younger and is buried in Broken Hill,” she said.
Proud grandfather Brian Uhl was grinning from ear to ear when he told the BDT of Angel’s success this week.
“What do you think? Of course I’m proud,” he laughed.
The winner of the competition will be crowned Dolly Ambassador, appear in the magazine and online each month for a year and star on the cover of the August edition of Dolly.
She would also score a contract with Chadwick Models, as well as a trip to New York.
The winner would be announced on Tuesday July 16.
