Kids kick off

Some of the action from yesterday’s soccer gala day. Some of the action from yesterday’s soccer gala day.

Primary school kids from years 3 and 4 took a break from the classroom yesterday to enjoy a kick at a soccer gala day.

The schools played off against each other in shortened five-a-side matches, and also took part in penalty shoot out and juggling competitions.

The event was coordinated by Tony Ashton (regional coordinator - Western NSW Broken Hill Active After-school Communities) in association with the Football Federation of South Australia.

Mr Ashton commended all schools on their participation rates, and said that all players had represented their schools brilliantly.

“It’s been a really good day, no scores were kept, and everyone just focused on participation,” he said.

“And the kids love it, especially  with the modified (5-a-side) rules and the smaller grounds.

“The kids get more touches of the ball, and it gives them a chance to learn through actually playing the game, rather than just through doing skills and drills.”

The novelty events proved particularly popular, with the penalty shootout competition won by sharpshooters Clarissa Hogan (BHPS) and Ky Gilmore (Burke Ward).

Meanwhile the ball juggling was won the skillful Charlton Howard (Sacred Heart) and Sarah Williams (BHPS).

“The (novelty events) were fantastic,” said Mr Ashton.

“Everyone was cheering them on, and it had a really good atmosphere.”
