The Broken Hill Roller Derby League is having a special training session conducted by a visiting coach this weekend.
Newly elected president of the local league, Heidi Hendry said, getting lessons from Bonnie Crash from Skate Victoria would be very beneficial.
“Bonnie Crash plays with the North Side Rollers and is a skater coach for Skate Victoria,” Heidi said.
She the sessions will help prepare players for a scrimmage they are having in August.
“I think Bonnie will teach specific skills to help us,” she said.
“She came up this time last year and she was a huge benefit.”
A scrimmage is a practice bout to enable team members to use the derby skills they have been perfecting in training.
“We recently had a scrimmage with the Murder City Rollers when they visited the city,” Heidi said.
“This time round we will be going to Adelaide to compete.”
The training session isn’t open to the public but interested people can come and have a look.
“We don’t mind people coming to watch if they would like to see what it is about,” Heidi said.
“Also they can come to our training which is held at the YMCA on Tuesday at 6pm to 8pm and Sunday from 10am to noon.”
Heidi said while the league has been running well, they would love to see more people join.
“We need more people to be part of the league and to help with things like refereeing,” she said.
“We have a lot of skill, which is often commented upon, but we need more people so we can practice bouting.”
Heidi said it doesn’t matter how experienced or fit you are, any women can join.
“We want people who can’t skate, those who can, or even those who are ex-artistic skaters.
“You can be at any fitness level, all shapes and sizes.”
The training session will run on Saturday from 1pm to pm at the Broken Hill Film Studio.
