Milton’s master class
Thursday, 8th August, 2013
The steady hand of Milton Hawke has delivered another indoor bowls title to the city.
Broken Hill was represented at the recent 2013 SA State Singles Championship by Milton and his grandson Aaron Hawke.
The two were put in the same section (Section 1) with the winner of each section to play in the grand final on the Sunday afternoon.
Milton was up against the 2013 SA Regional champion Maurice Keane and scored a hard-fought one-bowl win to make a great start to the campaign.
He then went on to defeat Peter Tindle, Aaron Hawke, Shaun Mules and Craig Flemming to clean sweep his section and move into the grand final.
Meanwhile, Aaron recorded his first win against Peter Tindle but was beaten by the more experienced players.
But he kept his head up and recorded his second win against Craig Flemming. It was a great effort by the 13-year old junior who will play at the Nationals Junior championships later this month.
Milton went on to face Mt Gambier’s Brad Errock in the final in an enthralling contest.
Milton got a mini break leading 9 to 2 and seemed to have control, but Brad put in a big effort back to cut the lead.
Coming into the last two ends Milton held a five-shot lead, but Brad soon cut this back to a two-shot lead.
The last end was a cliffhanger, and after both players played their third bowl Brad was holding one and needing another shot.
He attempted to force the kitty back but Milton had the back wood. Brad missed by an inch and Milton carried his last bowl up the mat giving Brad just one shot, and sealing the game.
The one shot victory handed Milton his second SA State Singles Championship.
Both players said they were now primed for the Nationals Championships later this month.
The Australian Titles will be held at Toowoomba, Queensland. Other players from Broken Hill taking part are Aileen McCormack, Noela Dart, Amelia Butler, Jodie Hawke, Samantha Hawke, Marlene Simons, Anne Bennetts, Milton Hawke, Steve Bennetts, Peter Simons, Aaron Hawke.
