Starry night outshines competition
Friday, 30th August, 2013
A dreamlike landscape shot of the Menindee Lakes under a starry night sky has won a photographer top honours at a prestigious nature photography contest.
Julie Fletcher took the top gong in the interpretive category of the Australian Geographic’s ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year Competition.
The picture, ‘Milky Way’, was taken after months of planning in December with a Nikon D800 fitted with a 14mm lens.
A surprised Ms Fletcher was informed of her win by the BDT yesterday on the day of the announcement.
“It was seven individual images that were taken and then it needed to be stitched together because you can see the Milky Way is quite large, she said.”
Ms Fletcher last year won the People’s Choice Award at the ANZANG Nature Photography Exhibition at the SA National Museum for her photo of the Menindee Lakes entitled ‘Graveyard.’
Her shot - as well as other winners and runners up - will be on show at the SA Museum from October 4 - November 24.
