A musical based on the Dr Seuss books and co-written by one of the Monty Python team will be Theatre 44’s next production.
Bookings are now open for the show, directed by Marilyn Harris, which will be presented next month. “Seussical” is a musical written by Ahrens and Flaherty with assistance from Eric Idle of the famous Monty Python comedy team. The libretto combines references to more than 12 different books written by Dr Seuss.
These books have favourites with children for the past 50 years.Titles such “Cat in the Hat”, “Horton Hears a Who” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” are prized for the way they help kids to read in an enjoyable way. “Seussical” is a colourful, fast moving show with beautiful music. A favourite is “Alone in the Universe”, but equally moving is “Solla Sollew” sung by Horton the Elephant and Jojo.
Scenery is being prepared and painted in the Dr Seuss style, costumes and props should impress, and about 35 kids and adults are rehearsing.
These productions, apart from supporting Theatre 44, are an opportunity for local young people to learn skills on stage and express their creativity, Mrs Harrissaid. Some are helping with the scenery painting, lighting, sound etc., and all are learning disciplines and values that will help their self-esteem and resilience.
