Legion a club no more
Wednesday, 19th March, 2014
Club Legion is going into liquidation and it assets will be sold.
A creditors’ meeting held yesterday decided that the club wasn’t viable to continue with the business.
The club’s former general manager Adrian McDonald said it had been resolved to “wind up the company”.
“It’s what needed to happen,” Mr McDonald said.
“The creditors had to decide whether to return the business to the board or liquidate the business.”
Mr McDonald said there was still a chance of amalgamation.
“This is an option that can be explored but the business won’t be able to run out of the (Legion Club) building,” he said.
“There are still two parties interested in amalgamation.”
Mr McDonald said all major assets will be put up for sale.
The Legion Club has been running since 1947, but as of February 11 the club went into administration.
That was under Simon Thorn of Newcastle insolvency specialists Lawler Partners.
On March 6, the club shut its doors as it had continued to run at a loss. At that time, Mr Thorn said his group’s intention had always been to try and keep the club running and secure jobs for its staff, but in the end it was simply not economically viable.
The BDT contacted Mr Thorn for further comment yesterday.
