A number of flats suffered considerable damage after fire ripped through a building on Billygoat Hill in Argent Street early yesterday morning.

Broken Hill Fire Station Officer Sean Doohan said crews received a call-out about 1.30am.

“The damage looks to be fairly extensive,” SO Doohan said.

“It appears the fire started in one unit and worked its way from there,” he said, adding that three out of four flats were severely damaged while the fourth suffered less.

It is understood the building was vacant at the time.

Officer Doohan was on the scene as part of the relief team after fire fighters had extinguished the blaze and said part of his task was ensuring the safety of the building.

“We’re making sure it’s not going to flare up, and securing the premises,” he said.

Forensics Services and Fire Investigation teams were also there to help investigate the cause of the fire.
