Winning is starting to become a habit for Iceni Magic.
The 20-month-old greyhound registered her second win in two starts at the Newmarket Raceway on Saturday afternoon.
Iceni Magic beat Shorty Can Do to claim the Grade Five 375 metre sprint.
Owner and trainer Susan Gray said that even she was surprised by her form considering she was broken in more slowly than other pups in the same litter.
“When they read out the time on Saturday we were pretty shocked,” she said.
“She went under 22 seconds to finish in 21.87.
“The more impressive thing is that the track was a bit heavy as well.”
It was the second week in a row that Iceni Magic had registered the fastest time of the day.
Her first win was a four-and-a-half length victory over Bonnie Jess.
Mrs Gray, who has been training greyhounds for the best part of 35 years, said Iceni Magic’s speed out of the box was her greatest asset.
“She great over the shorter distances and has brilliant speed early ... she got a bit checked in the race but was then well balanced and recovered well.”
Mrs Gray’s Railway Jack won the first race of the meet. She said there had been some bad press recently about the number of dogs euthanised in the industry but wanted to confirm they do make good companions once they retire from the track.
Some of her former racers have been given away as pets.
“They’re basically couch potatoes once they retire and they do adapt pretty well from chasing things to becoming more relaxed.”
“We have cocker spaniels as well, and they get along pretty well.
“There’s no real money in racing in Broken Hill anyway, you have to take them away to make money so it’s basically a hobby.
“It’s a real family thing, our daughter Tegan trained a dog called Sleek Classic that won a total of 42 races.”
Ms Gray had nominated Iceni Magic for a meet in Adelaide but the correct race wasn’t available.
“In Adelaide, the race distance is a little bit longer at 388m - her limit would probably be 450m,” she said.
She will most likely take her to Bendigo - Iceni Magic’s place of birth - over the Easter break.
