The popular YMCA Desert Dash is on again this weekend, this time with a new course.

“The Dash starts at the Living Desert and participants go out towards the Nine Mile, then turn back after 2.5 kilometres,” said YMCA co-ordinating manager, Marisa Webb.

“They loop around and do it again for the 10km category.”

The Dash is on Sunday, April 6 at 8am.

“We need all registrations by the close of business on Friday, April 4,” Ms Webb said.

“We have Murton’s Bus sponsoring two buses to take people from the Picton Oval to the Living Desert.

“They will be leaving 7am to be on site by 7.30am, then they will take people back after presentations.

There will also be a mini-bus from the Nine Mile Road to the Picnic site.

Entrants need to state whether they are running or walking, as there are different prizes for each category.

Entry costs $15 for adults, $10 for children under 18 and $35 for a family.

“It is a very family-orientated event,” said Ms Webb. “The new course can be done with a pram.

“There will be refreshments and food at the end of the event.”

The run is being sponsored by City Council, 2BH, Murton’s Bus, Maari Ma Aboriginal Health Corporation and the Democratic Club.

All the funds raised go towards YMCA programs.

“They will assist with youth programs at the local YMCA centre and the Regional Aquatic Centre,” Ms Webb said.

“We are hoping to get at least 100 nominations. It has been a bit slow but the event is coming up quickly.

“People who participate really enjoy the challenge.”

Ms Webb said the YMCA was also hoping to stage a triathlon in May.

Donna-Lee Wynen will be taking part in the 10 kilometre Fun Run.

“I want to be able to run it under 50 minutes,” Ms Wynen said.

“I ran it three years ago under an hour.

“I’ve been very active. I’ve been participating in boot camp, and four or five classes a week at the YMCA.

“My aim is to run in the Sydney marathon in September.”

Entry forms are available from the YMCA in Cobalt Street or at the Regional Aquatic Centre.
