Silver City 1000 shelved

Chairman of the Silver City Events Committee, Kevin Hind, is hopeful that the Silver City 1000 can be resurrected next year following the cancellation of this year’s race.
It was announced this week that the off-road event would not go ahead due to a lack of resources.
“We’d love to run again but we just haven’t got the ground support or time to make it happen,” Mr Hind said.
“The committee has decided to let it go for this year.”
Since moving to a fulltime job at the airport, Mr Hind says he cannot commit to the time to design and map the 1000km course.
The work involves a survey of the terrain, mapping a roadbook and also creating a hand-drawn ‘tulip’ for competitors.
“It also takes a lot of legwork to get properties involved and all the various paperwork,” he added.
“I think we need to start training new people and give them the experience in regards to the course mapping so that they can start doing these things as well.
“Last time it took my son and I about three months to put the course together.”
Mr Hinds said although the event made a slight profit in 2013, a lack of consistent numbers was another concern.
“Last year we had 16 people from outside of Broken Hill and we really need that to be around the 20 to 25 figure.
“We put up an expression of interest on our Facebook page recently and we only had a handful of people committing, which was concerning.
“It’s hard to organise and put in a lot of effort when you’re not sure exactly who is going to be turning up.”
Former committee member Adam Edwards said organisers put in an “astronomical” amount of time to get the event off the ground.
“Everyone who is involved are volunteers and Kevin has done the lion’s share of the work over the past few years,” Mr Edwards said.
Despite the challenges, Mr Hinds said the committee would work toward holding a Silver City 1000 in 2015.
He said he was hoping to have property owners on board by Christmas before mapping the course in the first few months of next year.
The Silver City 1000 was first held in 2012.
