Wilcannia ready for field day fun
Friday, 6th June, 2014
A fun field day, which started last year in Wilcannia, is being held again this weekend.
Tourism Association president Bill Elliot said the idea started last year to create a Wilcannia-based annual event.
“It was originally based on the old Wilcannia Gift race that was run here in the late 1970s, early 1980s,” Bill said.
“As work on organising the day progressed, so did the number of events and exhibits.
“A second feature event, suggested by Matt Elliott of Moira Plains Station, was a wool bale rolling event. This was hugely popular.
“We made a small amount of money in 2013 and this was put aside as seed funding for this year.”
Bill said there would be lots of events including the Wilcannia gift races, wool and hay bale rolling events, food stalls, trade stands, school displays, multi prize raffle, historic photo display and photo competition.
“We are also featuring a sheep dog attracting, horse handling and many other fun events,” he said.
There will be events for adults and children, as well as food stalls.
“Last year, we were expecting about 100 to 150 people to attend, but we had 350 people turn up; which was fantastic,” Bill said.
“We are hoping for that much and more this year.”
