A local mineral collector has put out the call for specimens to add to his collection in the lead up to the city’s first mineral show in three years.

Jason McCarthur said he had always had an interest in them, but it became serious when he bought a friend’s collection.

Jason is a member of the BH Mineral Club and he said all the members were very helpful.

“I’ve got a small collection compared to others in town. The club members are really good. They provide information and help me identify different pieces,” he said.

“I’ve been collecting for about two and a half years,” he said. “I’ve also been helping to organise this year’s ‘Rock On’ which will be on October 3 to 5.”

The Rock On Gem and Mineral Show attracts collectors from all over the nation.

It is normally held every two years and the club is hoping to get it up and running again at Penrose Park in Silverton. The last one was held in 2011.

“We’ve had interest from people from South Australia, Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales,” Jason said.

As to his collection, he said he recently put an advertisement in the BDT for single specimens or whole collections.

“You never know what people might have. There could be something special out there.”

He also said it was a great hobby for children.

“It’s something kids can get involved in.”
