Emergency services crews were called to 485 Thomas Street about 12.30pm yesterday as a house went up in flames.

The fire sent a huge plume of smoke into the air above the city, with firefighters battling the blaze well into the afternoon.

Although the house was totally gutted, it was empty at the time of the fire.

A police spokesperson said detectives and crime scene officers have inspected the property, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fire are ongoing.

The fire attracted many onlookers, prompting local crime manager Mick Stoltenberg to go on radio and appeal to residents to stay away.
