With a year of experience under his belt, youngster Aaron Hawke had a much-improved showing at the National Indoor Bowls Championship.

The 14-year-old competed in the junior category in Mt Gambier last month.

In his second year of bowling at a national level, he exceeded all expectations.

Aaron won five games and lost four.

"It was good fun," he said, adding that one of the biggest challenges was to stay focused over the five-day tournament.

"I get distracted sometimes, but when I focus I do pretty well."

Aaron had tough competition this year but managed to keep his head high when he was beaten by the junior champ from Queensland as well as the two Tasmanian boys and one Victorian boy.

He was in line for a bronze medal on the Saturday and was beaten by four shots to put him back to equal fourth, but just lost it on percentage.

He was one of the youngest in the junior field, coming up against bowlers as old as 17.

Aaron plans to continue bowling in town for the remainder of the year.
