With team names like Bush Oysters, Red Jelly Frogs and Baby Virgin Blue Smurfs, it's not difficult to guess the Broken Hill hockey competition is a whole lot of fun.
After re-forming this year, the league is holding its grand final tomorrow.
Spokesperson and player Donna-Lee Wynen said the nineweek competition had attracted more players than expected.
"It had been off for about two years before we started it up again," she said.
"The plan was to originally have two teams but we got enough interest for three which was fantastic.
"The atmosphere has been great and everyone leaves with a smile on their face."
She said the social atmosphere surrounding the sport was outstanding.
"Some of the people involved have been through some life-changing experiences and have told me that it's helped them be able to socialise again.
"Aside from getting the game going again, that's just a huge thing."
As for the names, it was pretty much anything goes.
"Well the story with the Blue Smurfs is that we had a few younger members in our team who hadn't played before, hence the virgin part of the name," Wynen said.
"We're obviously blue and then we just decided to add on the smurf part at the end."
The hockey league is holding their Annual General Meeting on February 18, with goals of a more structured competition in 2015.
"The aim is to register as an association under hockey New South Wales, so then we can have access resources in regards to referees and a few other things," Wynen said.
"We've also been invited to play a game against a side in Mildura, so that would be something exciting as well."
Wynen was sitting on the fence when it came to a prediction for the grand final between the Blue Smurfs and Red Jelly Frogs.
"Well I'm part of the Smurfs, so I can't give a balanced answer but it doesn't really matter who wins."
The match begins at 2pm at Picton Oval.
